Murphy Oil Corporation is a US-based integrated oil and gas company with refining and marketing operations in the United States and the United Kingdom and crude oil and natural gas exploration and production operations worldwide.
Murphy’s upstream operations are in the Gulf of Mexico, Canada, United Kingdom, Suriname, Congo, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Murphy began operations in Malaysia in 1999 through its three subsidiaries: Murphy Sarawak Oil Co Ltd, Murphy Sabah Oil Co Ltd and Murphy Peninsular Malaysia Oil Co Ltd.
Together with its partner Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, Murphy is involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas fields offshore Sabah, Sarawak and east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Murphy operates the Kikeh field, Malaysia’s first deepwater project, located 120km off Labuan and in average water depths of 1,300 metres. Kikeh began production on August 17, 2007, only five years after discovery. It has the capacity to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day. Despite being one of the most challenging deepwater developments, Kikeh has set exemplary records and standards in safety, execution and timing.
In addition to Kikeh, Murphy operates the West Patricia field offshore Bintulu, which has produced over 30 million barrels of oil to date. Discovery of this field was in December 2000, with first production achieved within two and a half years in May 2003. West Patricia continues to sustain world class HSE performance.
Murphy is also developing natural gas fields offshore Sarawak. Natural gas produced from the phased development of the fields will be supplied to the Petronas MLNG complex in Bintulu. Under a Gas Sales Agreement, Murphy will supply 250 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfpd) for a period of five years, with a provision to supply up to 350 mmcfpd for another 10 years. Production commenced from one of the fields on 17 September 2009.
From a two-man operation in 1999, Murphy’s staff in Malaysia has grown to almost 500 personnel, of which 80 percent are Malaysians.
